After the Jet Lag: Germany 2019, pt. 5

Up early to catch the train to Salzburg, Austria on Tuesday, June 18.

TRAVEL TIP:
I had booked my tickets with trainline.com ahead of time, which worked out GREAT!  They found the best prices for what we needed, and I was able to print tickets (you can also use their app).  No guessing about tickets at the station - you've got everything already in hand!

The Meridian line gets you from Holzkirchen to Salzburg with one change of trains in about 2 hours.
We also later used the BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn) to get to Munich ... which was also an easy connection from Holzkirchen in about an hour.
**TRAVEL TIP:  BOB train tickets purchased from a vending machine at the station need to be validated (entwertet) before you board the train with a date stamp at the appropriate machine on the platform.  MAKE SURE you stamp the designated, blank area (we stamped ours otherwise, and the conductor called us out!  Nicely however....)**

It was a HOT day ... and we WALKED from the train station to the Mirabell Palace and Gardens and then on to the Altstadt (old town) and back to the train station.  I'm sure a more prepared visitor to Salzburg can take the bus around town.  Also, my cousin said the trip to the Hohensalzburg Fortress is worth it - you can take a tram/cable car (Funicular) up to the fortress.  We did not make the time to do this ... but NEXT TIME!!

The Mirabell Palace Gardens is where the song "Do Re Mi" was filmed for the Sound of Music.  Among the scenes is the hedge tunnel the children run through and the Pegasus fountain they dance around:

You can also tour the palace ... but we just had time to explore the gardens.

After the palace gardens, we walked to the Salzach River and crossed over the "Love Locks" bridge (Makartsteg).

Hohensalzburg Fortress (to the south)

Looking towards the north.

Once we cross the river, we headed to the Altstadt (old town) of Salzburg for browsing shops, lunch and Mozart's birth house, which deserves its own post:  part 6
